A CMMC readiness assessment is the work you do before your official assessment: measuring your environment against the same controls a C3PAO will check, so you walk in knowing your score instead of discovering it. It is not the certification itself, and it is not performed by an assessor. It is the preparation that decides whether your real assessment goes smoothly or stalls.
What a CMMC readiness assessment measures
A Level 2 readiness assessment evaluates your environment against the 110 controls and 320 assessment objectives of NIST SP 800-171, the same baseline the DoD Assessment Methodology uses to compute your SPRS score. A thorough one produces three things: your current score, the specific control objectives you do not yet meet, and a remediation order that recovers the most points for the least effort.
The gap that surprises people is between self-reported and measured. An SPRS score self-attested once and never recomputed drifts as configurations change, staff turn over, and new cloud tools enter scope. A readiness assessment finds that gap before an assessor does.
Why measure before you remediate
The Department of Defense's own analysis put the three-year cost of a Level 2 certification at $104,670 for a small entity (DoD CMMC Regulatory Impact Analysis, pages 13 to 14). The C3PAO engagement is the smaller piece, $31,234 (page 26). Most of the rest is the contractor's own staff time and outside consultant or service-provider support to prepare for and support the assessment. That figure also leaves out the cost of implementing the controls and remediating gaps (pages 15 to 16), which depends on how far your environment sits from them.
So a costly mistake in CMMC is paying for an assessment before you are ready. A readiness assessment is the cheap step that protects the expensive one: it tells you what to fix first, so you spend remediation effort where it moves the score.
